I am not a fan of this phrase, as it is misleading and chasing this type of balance brings no lasting results. The main reason people can’t attain it is because they completely neglect self care and building healthy relationships with others. Writer Annie Dillard said, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
If you are only trying to achieve career success without making changes to your mindset and the overall personal well-being, you might want to reconsider your approach. According to PayScale (2018), people only spend 328 days on average socializing with friends over the course of their life. In the book, Happiness at
Work, Jessica Pryce-Jones states that for a lot of people 1/3 of a lifetime or 90,000 hours will be spent at work.
The Conference Board (2018) reports that 53 percent of Americans are currently unhappy at work. Are you one of these 53 percent? If you are,
statistically speaking, a great portion of your life will be spent unhappy in general. Why? This unhappiness will trickle into your personal affairs as well. While working you are living. Therefore, separating work and life, while attempting to become fulfilled, is unattainable. Look at your life as a whole and strive for an overall balanced living without separating your work from it.
You need to tap into some of the personal life values that will be your guiding light. You have to follow the light within you, and this involves looking at yourself as a whole person, not just a job seeker.
As Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trace winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.
